The night is warm and damp from a day of rain as I walk into the Side Launch Taproom; tonight, it’s not the typical laidback brewery everyone knows. Instead, it’s been transformed into an elegant and enchanting art exhibit that is Moving Still.
Right away, my eyes are met with the works of local photographers showcased around the room, signature cocktails being served, live music, and even silk performers hanging from the ceiling as they pour champagne into guests’ glasses. It’s a pretty epic scene here. And the place is filled with people all here to support an essential cause. The theme of the night is Simply Georgian Bay, an appreciation of the beauty of our natural landscape, and the people within it.
Hosted as a fundraiser for the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital, they have partnered with local photographers Jessica Crandlemire, Erin J. Coholan, Colin Field & Corynn Fowler to showcase their work, which has been inspired by the natural landscape of our home: Georgian Bay. Each photograph captures the various characteristics of its beauty. From the rocky shores, and the glass-like surface, to the serene sunrises and sunsets, each image encapsulates the natural beauty of the Bay. Through the lens of these local photographers, guests are transported to familiar scenery that evokes a deep sense of nostalgia and connection to the place they call home.
The inspiration the artists have found in our natural landscape is evident through the works displayed around the walls of the brewery. I find a chance to ask one of the featured artists Erin J. Coholan what it means to her to have her work featured in an event that celebrates the beauty of Georgian Bay.
“It means a lot,” she says. “I think any chance to celebrate our natural surroundings and pay attention to where we live is an important practice. Fostering recognition and appreciation is only amplified when shared with others and I think it’s a powerful way to unite people.”
Speaking of uniting people, events like Moving Still play a vital role in supporting local artists while simultaneously rallying communities behind essential causes. Through art auctions and donations, guests not only contribute to the betterment of their community but also actively participate in uplifting local artists. All proceeds from the night go towards the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital.
The theme of Simply Georgian Bay serves as a reminder of our locale here in Grey Bruce Simcoe, but also of the dedication exhibited by healthcare workers who tirelessly serve our community.
