With your first step into lit wine & books in downtown Collingwood, it is clear that you are going to be there awhile.
Immediately, you’re hit with the depth and warmth of a beautiful bookstore and a sophisticated bar and lounge area. Your shoulders relax and you think, ‘honestly, what else could I want in life?’
Lit opened in April of this year when two sisters decided to combine two things they know and love: books and wine.

In three short months, lit has established a monthly book club event along with a silent reading night, both paired with flights of wine if you are so inclined. As the year progresses, there are plans to establish other events pairing books and wine and bringing people together.

The layout of lit’s book and wine bar seamlessly moves you from a bar and lounge area to a meticulously curated selection of books. The two work so perfectly together you start to feel like you are in the home of your dreams.

The front half of the store is a beautiful wine bar with stools and plush seating to enjoy a glass of wine and dip into your new book. It’s an atmosphere perfect for a book club gathering and sharing of stories and favourite reads. Of course, it’s also perfect for trying a new wine and getting expert advice from the staff.
The back half of lit is for books. The selection is decidedly contemporary focusing on new fiction for adults and young adults, but also includes a selection of kids picture books.

There is an emphasis on romance and romantasy, science fiction, mysteries & thrillers, but also the most current literary titles. As Karlee, (one of the owners), says: “the selection of books is meeting people where they are in the present day. Years ago, there was a hesitancy and maybe a prejudice against speculative and romance fiction, but not anymore.”
Today, these genres cover escapism which is in high demand given our complicated and messy world, but they are also literary, insightful and provocative, often with very strong and compelling female characters. There is an element of playfulness in the events and even the book display.
At the front of the store is a romance section titled “Extra Spicy”. Some new book releases elicit a wine pairing. Dark, gothic fantasy … perfect with a beefy cabernet. Summer fling…how about a fresh sauvignon blanc.

Which comes first? Wine or Books?
The answer depends on each person and changes with each visit. A great new book begets a glass of wine, and a glass of wine begets the need for the next great read.
You will find lit wine & books in downtown Collingwood and it is a must visit for anyone who loves, books, wine or even better, both.
