Camryn Ruthven – Reclaiming the Matriarchs

Camryn Ruthven – Reclaiming the Matriarchs
Tending to ancestral embers, Camryn Ruthven (she/her) explores the Gàidhlig lineage through song, with a focus on honouring and reclaiming women’s traditions from the Gàidhealtachd (Scottish Highlands) – from keening grief rituals to work songs and bagpiping trailblazers. She weaves the medicines of earth-centredness and Gàidhlig traditions into her own creative tapestry through songwriting, vocal improvisation, Soundwork, and instrumentation (primarily piano/guitar/bodhrán). Her distinctive vocal style draws its inspirations from the raw, highly-ornamented, earthy qualities of traditional waulking songs and the natural world.
This evening weaves performances of traditional melodies and original compositions with story-sharing and research, offering a glimpse into the various facets of women’s lives, work, social roles, and music in the Scottish Highlands.
