SUMMARY:Grey Roots Lecture Series - Gold of Another Kind: Allen Smutylo
DESCRIPTION:April 8: Gold of Another Kind – The Lost Legacy of Georgian Bay\n\nPlease note: this week’s lecture is on a Wednesday to accommodate the presenter’s schedule. \nPresenter: Allen Smutylo \nWith the introduction of his new book\, Gold of Another Kind – The Lost Legacy of Georgian Bay\, Allen Smutylo’s presentation combines a historical overview with his personal account of the once staggering quality and quantity of fur bearing animals\, virgin timber and multitudes of fish that once thrived in Georgian Bay and vicinity.  \nBeginning in the 1600s\, the unrelenting thrust of European ambition for “gold of another kind” unleashed adventurous\, heroic\, bizarre\, and tragic consequences in the New World. The pursuant plundering of each of these natural resources happened on a scale that would rival the voracity of any gold rush. \nAbout the presenter: \nAllen Smutylo’s artwork and writing has been based on extensive travels to some of the Earth’s most remote places. This includes the Amazon\, the South Pacific\, the Arctic\, Greenland\, the Himalaya\, Rajasthan\, the Ganges River\, West Africa\, Antarctica\, Central America\, Morocco\, Patagonia and the Altai Mountains of Mongolia.  \nSmutylo’s images often depict specific experiences as well as geophysical elements\, land and marine biology\, and figurative images portraying cultural life as well as the imprint of previous lives. These ideas are often juxtaposed with elements of collage\, conveying a feeling of ‘land memory’ or a mythology of place. \nHe has complimented his artwork with the authoring 5 books. Three of which have won or been short listed for national or international awards including The Governor General Literary Award. \nThe Globe and Mail called his work and his writing “… a profound and poignant meditation on the connection between landscape and culture.” \nHis artwork is included in over 300 corporate and public collections. His work has been exhibited in dozens of solo shows and countless group shows nationally and internationally. His adventures and art were featured in the Radio-Canada’s film The Last Frontier. \nAllen Smutylo resides in Big Bay\, Ontario. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGold of Another Kind – author Allen Smutylo\n\nAuthor and Presenter Allen Smutylo

SUMMARY:Genealogical Miracles
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL\, via Zoom\n  \nKen will be taking a sometimes-humorous look at some of the very interesting gaffs and errors that can be found in family trees such as “Resurrection”\, “The well preserved”\, and “Time travellers”. At the same time\, he will cover how to hopefully prevent those same pesky genealogical miracles from appearing in our own trees. \nRegister HERE: bit.ly/2026-04-13-KenMcKinlay \nHosted by the Bruce County Genealogical Society. \n \n  \nAbout Ken: \nEmbarking on a genealogical adventure over two decades ago\, Ken McKinlay’s quest began with a mission to confirm or debunk three family stories. Despite uncovering the truths behind those initial tales\, Ken’s passion for delving into his family’s past remains steadfast\, fueled by a constant stream of new questions. As a sought-after speaker by branches of Ontario Ancestors\, the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa\, and other genealogy societies across Canada\, Ken McKinlay shares his expertise through engaging talks and workshops. SUMMARY:Amy Milan - YOU WENT OUR TOUR
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this chance to get up close with one of Canada’s most iconic voices. Amy Millan — the luminous heart of Stars — is stepping onto the cozy Avening Hall stage in Creemore on Saturday\, April 18 for an intimate solo performance you’ll be talking about for years. \nThis tour is more than a series of concerts. It’s a homecoming for the artist. With I Went To Find You\, her first solo album in over 15 years (out May 30\, 2025 on Last Gang Records)\, Amy returns to the vulnerable\, soul-searching storytelling that first captured fans across the indie universe. Expect the honesty\, the ache\, and the shimmering warmth you know from Stars\, woven with the adventurous spirit of BSS — but brought into sharp\, personal focus. \nHer new songs are stunning: cinematic landscapes\, haunting vocals\, and emotional depth that pull you right into her world. From the luminous “Make Way for Waves” to the beautifully fragile lead single “Wire Walks\,” Amy’s latest work carries the same magic that made so many of us fall in love with her music in the first place. \nWith decades of unforgettable collaborations — Feist\, Kevin Drew\, Emily Haines\, and the entire sprawling BSS family — Amy has shaped the soundtrack of a generation. Now she’s inviting you into a space small enough to feel every note. \nThis is a STANDING ROOM ONLY show\, but we’re happy to make accommodations with advance notice. \nJoin us for an extraordinary night with Amy Millan — a rare solo appearance from a beloved artist whose music has carried so many of us through joy\, heartbreak\, and everything in between.
