SUMMARY:BALL Series: a Deep Dive into the Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:An Undiscovered Country No Longer: The Archaeology of An Early Hunting Site Beneath Lake Huron\nSince the initial discovery of early hunting sites beneath Lake Huron\, archaeologists have worked to produce a progressively more detailed picture of the ancient environment and of the way human groups came to occupy and exploit the newly exposed landscape. These sites have been explored using a wide variety of methods\, from sonar and remote operated vehicles (ROVs) to direct excavation by SCUBA trained archaeologists. More recently\, the research tool kit has expanded to include artificial intelligence (AI)\, virtual reality (VR)\, and the extraction of ancient environmental DNA. While much is now known about these early hunters\, many questions remain to be answered\, such as the nature of their earliest sites\, what relationship did they have with the peoples living around the lake\, and what ultimately happened to the early hunters when the lake levels again began to rise? The talk will conclude with some thoughts on the possible answers. \nLecturer – John O’Shea\n\nJohn O’Shea is the Curator of Great Lakes Archaeology at the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology and Professor in the Department of Anthropology.  He received his PhD in Prehistoric Archaeology from Cambridge University.  He has directed major field projects focused on Bronze Age societies in Hungary\, Romania\, and Serbia\, and on late pre-contact cultures in North America.  His current work is focused on underwater archaeology in the Great Lakes\, where his research involves both historic shipwrecks and ancient submerged hunting sites.

SUMMARY:Grey Roots Fall Lecture Series: Elysia DeLaurentis – A Grave Offenc
DESCRIPTION:October 28: Elysia DeLaurentis – A Grave Offence\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 28 at 1 PM – included with admission and free for Grey Roots members. \nSome are surprised to learn that body snatching was widely practiced in Ontario throughout the 19th century and even into the early 20th. Repugnant and disconcerting to most\, it was viewed by many at the time as a necessary evil. While no one wanted their own graves or those of loved ones to be disturbed\, most recognized the importance of fresh cadavers in providing medical students with the hands-on experience they needed to gain competency in their field. This illustrated talk explores the rich and complex history of a subject that was viewed with distaste at the time and is almost unfathomable today. It delves into the long history of the practice and\, using examples from urban and rural Ontario\, examines whose bodies got snatched and how\, what became of them\, and who was behind this unsavoury practice. \nA more suitable presentation for Halloween would be difficult to find! It will be a perfect accompaniment to our exhibit\, Going Out in Style\, returning to Grey Roots in October. \nPresenter Elysia DeLaurentis is a returning favourite of our Lecture Series. She is a local historian with over 25 years experience in the heritage field. She is the owner of\, and principal researcher for\, Oakenwood Research Services.
