SUMMARY:B.A.L.L. Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Huron Fish Community and Ecosystem Change\nThe Lake Huron aquatic ecosystem has experienced profound changes to the composition and dynamics of its fish communities. Most of these recent changes are a consequence of the continued introduction of invasive exotic species which have altered food webs\, affecting the most minute plankton species as well as top predatory fishes.  David will review the historic legacy of changes in the lake and highlight contemporary developments that range from tentative steps towards native species recovery to the ongoing proliferation of exotic species\, habitat alteration and other changes. He will also briefly explore the possible effects of climate change on Great Lakes fish communities. \nLecturer –     David Gonder \n\nDavid was born in Owen Sound and has spent the majority of his career working on Lake Huron at OMNR’s Upper Great Lakes Management Unit.  As the Resource Management Supervisor at the Unit since 2014\, he and his team lead fisheries management planning on both Lake Huron and Lake Superior.  This includes work with Indigenous communities and stakeholders as well as species specific management and rehabilitation plans.  David is also an ardent\, life long fly fisher\, fly tyer and rod builder.

SUMMARY:The Poet Laureate's Community Revue
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in a world of poetry and art showcasing the power of collaboration ft. Owen Sound Poet Laureate Rebecca Diem & friends!\n\n\n\nThe Poet Laureate’s Community Revue is a celebration of collaboration\, bringing together local artists from diverse artistic disciplines to create new works and showcase existing collaborations created during the tenure of Owen Sound Poet Laureate Rebecca Diem. \nGet inspired by a collection of visual and experiential poetry during the two-day multi-arts exhibit in the Harmony Centre Commons (Sat & Sun)\, followed by an exclusive matinee performance (Sun only) where Diem will perform her collection of works inspired by beach walks with a sleeping baby alongside a series of ephemeral co-creations developed in collaboration with her community. \nEstablished in 2007 by former Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library CEO Judy Beth Armstrong\, the poet laureate program seeks to support and highlight the literary arts in the area. The work of the poet laureate culminates with the creation of a legacy project which is a unique and lasting contribution to the community. \nAs Diem’s legacy project\, The Poet Laureate’s Community Revue aims to bridge the gap between various creative mediums\, encouraging poets\, musicians\, visual artists\, dancers (& more!) to collaborate on unique\, never-before-seen pieces—and to inspire community members to see the poetry of their own lives\, too. \nDiem has invited audiences to participate in the co-creation of unique\, collaborative poetry – including a 50th Anniversary Summerfolk poem performed alongside more than 1\,000 collaborators – who are then named poets in their own right. \nThis is a one-time only opportunity to immerse yourself in Diem’s world of creativity\, inspiration and collaboration\, and to celebrate the power of community arts. Join us in Owen Sound on November 22 & 23 for an unforgettable experience.

Though that relationship ended\, her love for this area is lifelong. She worked at Bruce Power from 1983 to 2015 and now lives in a LEED Gold home in Tiverton. SUMMARY:Fall Lecture Series: songs of Georgian Bay
DESCRIPTION:Late in the nineteenth century\, passengers and goods were transported around the many ports of Georgian Bay on wooden steamships. The region was booming with lumber mills and fishing stations. As competition rose for the business of moving these goods\, the owners and captains took great risks. Sailing late into the season\, braving the severe unpredictable waters of Georgian Bay\, many tragic endings came to those travellers. Using descriptive lyrics and music along with rare photographs and newspaper articles collected from regional museums and archives\, “Songs of Georgian Bay” unfolds the tragic and sometimes mysterious stories of those lost steamers. \nKevin Moyse is a local singer/songwriter and history enthusiast.

SUMMARY:BALL Series: A Deep Dive into the Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:The Bruce Peninsula: A Great Lakes History\nGeorgian Bay greatly influenced both the settlement of the region and the lives of the Indigenous peoples who lived on its western shores for centuries. The story I will tell will include how the region evolved through competition between various entities: Indigenous nations\, who battled to control the region; Europeans questing for furs\, forest products and settlement lands\, making treaties; and the port communities vying for regional economic and political dominance. Topics in my presentation will include the role of staple commodities such as fur\, fish\, and lumber. Also included will be the impact of the British military\, the emergence of shipbuilding\, shipwrecks\, tourism\, the role of maritime travel for political events\, including an averted shipwreck which could have changed the Canadian nation. I will include stories of valiant sailors and other citizens\, including some of the early visitors to the region. \nLecturer –   Paul White  \n\nBorn in Owen Sound as the fifth generation of the Bruce Peninsula’s first settler family\, Paul earned a BA (Trent) and MA (Western). His thesis was “The Impact of Forest Products and Tourism Industries on the Bruce Peninsula\, 1850-2019.”  A prolific writer\, Paul co-authored “A Marine History of Fathom Five National Marine Park\, 1850 to 1900” for Parks Canada\, wrote a local history column from 1994-2003 in the Owen Sound Sun Times\, and authored the books Owen Sound the Port City; Journey Through Owen Sound’s Hockey History; Journey the Bruce Peninsula: Past & Present; Shipwrecks\, Parks\, & Sawmills: Their Impact on the Bruce Peninsula\, 1850-2019. SUMMARY:Flamingos
DESCRIPTION:Flamingos: From jukebox oldies and ’70s disco\, through pop and rock of the ’80s and ’90s\, to early 2000s R&B\, the Flamingos will play it all! \nWell-known for playing the best hits of the decades\, the Flamingos show also features original music. With a freshly released original EP\, the band will deliver new songs alongside favourite covers.  “Flamingos are not a band to sit still to. They’re great fun and the covers they play bring people back to a particular time in their lives. A dance party inevitably breaks out\, so we thought we’d be ready for it!” \nBest party band in town” – Spencer Shewen (artistic director Riverfest Elora\, Mariposa) \n“The tightest\, snazziest\, most on-brand\, colour-coded cover band in the Eastern Standard Time Zone!” – Jonny Dovercourt (Wavelength Music Series) \n“We are not trying to reinvent music. We are\, however\, imitating giants of music to the best of our very questionable and often limited abilities. We are hard to stifle or to suppress. You say we are bald\, we find wigs. You say our best years are behind us\, we wear costumes”! \n“They were dressed in pink tuxedos\, played pink guitars and even had pink patch cables. Full shtick\, fully ridiculous\, absolutely fun” – Michael Barclay (national best selling author/ CBC/ Macleans) \nSounds Like: Beatles\, Hollies\, Beach Boys\, Roy Orbison. Genre: 60s English rock. \nFor the common goal of having a good time\, Flamingos are a cover group of bandmates from such acts as Bry Webb’s Providers\, Royal Castles\, Del Bel\, Legato Vipers\, and Gregory Pepper’s Problems. Having “read the room” on original music for decades\, they were able to find momentum in playing music people want to hear. Now the band has decided to pivot\, and tackle making original music that pays homage to the classic bands and eras they know and love.
