SUMMARY:B.A.L.L. Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:All Too Clear: Beneath the Surface of the Great Lakes\nFor the past three years\, documentary filmmakers Yvonne Drebert and Zach Melnick have been exploring the underwater world of the Great Lakes with a cutting-edge underwater drone\, or “ROV.” Diving to the lake’s greatest depths and filming for hours at a time has allowed the husband-and-wife team to capture never-before-seen footage of the lakes’ most elusive species.\nJoin these freshwater explorers and their ROV\, “Kiyi\,” for a “behind-the-scenes” look at their latest documentary\, “All Too Clear.” See how quadrillions of invasive mussels have re-engineered the Great Lakes on a scale not seen since glaciers. Organisms of all kinds—from tiny plankton to large fish—are vanishing\, creating vast biological deserts. From dazzling shallow-water worlds resembling the Caribbean to the shipwreck of the “Africa\,” entombed in mussels 300 feet below—All Too Clear explores the freshwater world like never before. \nThis lecture will begin with the showing of a 20 minute version of Yvonne and Zach’s award-winning feature-length documentary\, followed by the usual talk and Q&A format. \n  \nLecturers – Yvonne Drebert & Zach Melnick \n\n\n\n\n\nFilmmakers Yvonne Drebert and Zach Melnick are the founders of Inspired Planet Productions\, located on the beautiful Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula in Ontario. For more than two decades\, the husband-and-wife team have been shining the spotlight on Canadian nature and history stories\, creating more than 40 hours of broadcast documentary\, including the 2021 Canadian Screen Award nominated series\, “Striking Balance.” For their 2024 series “All Too Clear\,” Drebert and Melnick shifted their lens to the underwater world. Using cutting-edge ROVs\, they immerse themselves in rarely seen aquatic environments\, capturing extraordinary wildlife behaviours\, and even discovering the occasional shipwreck. \nAll Too Clear Film Website

SUMMARY:A Skydiggers Christmas
DESCRIPTION:For over 25 years\, Skydiggers’ friends and fans have gathered during the holidays to celebrate the season to the soundtrack of the band’s distinctive rootsy Christmas tunes and Skydiggers’ classics. What started at Toronto’s Legendary Horseshoe Tavern grew into an annual tradition at the Danforth Music Hall and has since taken the holiday show on the road. \n“We’ve realized that the most moving moments of the season are more than just expressions of glad tidings and comfort and joy\,” says Skydigger Andy Maize. “That there are moments of melancholy\, regret and truth that are\, in their own way\, as much a part of the Christmas experience as any joyous carol. We want to put on a show that both celebrates the season while leaving room for quieter\, more personal moments.” \nPlease note that the balcony level is ONLY accessible by stairs.\n♿ For accessible seating\, please call the Box Office at 1-877-538-0463.

SUMMARY:B.A.L.L. Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Huron Fish Community and Ecosystem Change\nThe Lake Huron aquatic ecosystem has experienced profound changes to the composition and dynamics of its fish communities. Most of these recent changes are a consequence of the continued introduction of invasive exotic species which have altered food webs\, affecting the most minute plankton species as well as top predatory fishes.  David will review the historic legacy of changes in the lake and highlight contemporary developments that range from tentative steps towards native species recovery to the ongoing proliferation of exotic species\, habitat alteration and other changes. He will also briefly explore the possible effects of climate change on Great Lakes fish communities. \nLecturer –     David Gonder \n\nDavid was born in Owen Sound and has spent the majority of his career working on Lake Huron at OMNR’s Upper Great Lakes Management Unit.  As the Resource Management Supervisor at the Unit since 2014\, he and his team lead fisheries management planning on both Lake Huron and Lake Superior.  This includes work with Indigenous communities and stakeholders as well as species specific management and rehabilitation plans.  David is also an ardent\, life long fly fisher\, fly tyer and rod builder.

SUMMARY:The Poet Laureate's Community Revue
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in a world of poetry and art showcasing the power of collaboration ft. Owen Sound Poet Laureate Rebecca Diem & friends!\n\n\n\nThe Poet Laureate’s Community Revue is a celebration of collaboration\, bringing together local artists from diverse artistic disciplines to create new works and showcase existing collaborations created during the tenure of Owen Sound Poet Laureate Rebecca Diem. \nGet inspired by a collection of visual and experiential poetry during the two-day multi-arts exhibit in the Harmony Centre Commons (Sat & Sun)\, followed by an exclusive matinee performance (Sun only) where Diem will perform her collection of works inspired by beach walks with a sleeping baby alongside a series of ephemeral co-creations developed in collaboration with her community. \nEstablished in 2007 by former Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library CEO Judy Beth Armstrong\, the poet laureate program seeks to support and highlight the literary arts in the area. The work of the poet laureate culminates with the creation of a legacy project which is a unique and lasting contribution to the community. \nAs Diem’s legacy project\, The Poet Laureate’s Community Revue aims to bridge the gap between various creative mediums\, encouraging poets\, musicians\, visual artists\, dancers (& more!) to collaborate on unique\, never-before-seen pieces—and to inspire community members to see the poetry of their own lives\, too. \nDiem has invited audiences to participate in the co-creation of unique\, collaborative poetry – including a 50th Anniversary Summerfolk poem performed alongside more than 1\,000 collaborators – who are then named poets in their own right. \nThis is a one-time only opportunity to immerse yourself in Diem’s world of creativity\, inspiration and collaboration\, and to celebrate the power of community arts. Join us in Owen Sound on November 22 & 23 for an unforgettable experience.

SUMMARY:Fall Lecture Series: songs of Georgian Bay
DESCRIPTION:Late in the nineteenth century\, passengers and goods were transported around the many ports of Georgian Bay on wooden steamships. The region was booming with lumber mills and fishing stations. As competition rose for the business of moving these goods\, the owners and captains took great risks. Sailing late into the season\, braving the severe unpredictable waters of Georgian Bay\, many tragic endings came to those travellers. Using descriptive lyrics and music along with rare photographs and newspaper articles collected from regional museums and archives\, “Songs of Georgian Bay” unfolds the tragic and sometimes mysterious stories of those lost steamers. \nKevin Moyse is a local singer/songwriter and history enthusiast.
