SUMMARY:"The Old Lady Went Along" Senior Migration in the 1800s
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre \nHosted by the Bruce County Genealogical Society \nWe all have 19th century examples in our family histories where parents\, children and grandparents migrated to\, or within\, Canada. What was the impact on the aged folk who left their families\, and their long-time friends and neighbours? Or the physical stresses from the trip itself and the life they found in the wilderness? Or the impact on the older generation who could not\, or would not\, make the trip? This talk will tell the stories of Dianne Brydon’s aging ancestors: those who travelled to Canada from Ireland and Scotland; those who moved again for new opportunities\, having grown old in Canada; and those who were left behind. \nRegister HERE: https://bit.ly/2025-05-12-DianneBrydon-BCGS \nOr by emailing BCGSWebinars@gmail.com \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nDianne Brydon has used skills learned from her Masters in Historical Geography to research her various family histories. She likes nothing more than travelling to archives in the UK\, Canada\, and the US. There\, she sneezed through bundles of dusty documents. The gems she finds help to piece together her ancestors’ colourful stories. \nIn 2017\, Dianne and her father published their family history. The book is titled “The Stalwart Brydons: From Scotland to Galt to Portage La Prairie”. Since then\, she has written articles and given talks to family history/genealogy/local history groups in both Scotland and Canada. She is currently President of the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa.

SUMMARY:Flamingos
DESCRIPTION:Flamingos: From jukebox oldies and ’70s disco\, through pop and rock of the ’80s and ’90s\, to early 2000s R&B\, the Flamingos will play it all!  \nWell-known for playing the best hits of the decades\, the Flamingos show also features original music. With a freshly released original EP\, the band will deliver new songs alongside favourite covers.  “Flamingos are not a band to sit still to. They’re great fun and the covers they play bring people back to a particular time in their lives. A dance party inevitably breaks out\, so we thought we’d be ready for it.” \nBest party band in town” – Spencer Shewen (artistic director Riverfest Elora\, Mariposa) \n“The tightest\, snazziest\, most on-brand\, colour-coded cover band in the Eastern Standard Time Zone!” – Jonny Dovercourt (Wavelength Music Series) \n“They were dressed in pink tuxedos\, played pink guitars and even had pink patch cables. Full shtick\, fully ridiculous\, absolutely fun” – Michael Barclay (national best selling author/ CBC/ Macleans) \nSounds Like: Beatles\, Hollies\, Beach Boys\, Roy Orbison. Genre: 60s English rock.  \nFor the common goal of having a good time\, Flamingos are a cover group of bandmates from such acts as Bry Webb’s Providers\, Royal Castles\, Del Bel\, Legato Vipers\, and Gregory Pepper’s Problems. Having “read the room” on original music for decades\, they were able to find momentum in playing music people want to hear. Now the band has decided to pivot\, and tackle making original music that pays homage to the classic bands and eras they know and love. \nQuotes from the band that nobody asked for: \n“We are not trying to reinvent music. We are\, however\, imitating giants of music to the best of our very questionable and often limited abilities” \n“We are hard to stifle or to suppress. You say we are bald\, we find wigs. You say our best years are behind us\, we wear costumes”

SUMMARY:Dereck Seguin
DESCRIPTION:“Canada’s Top Comic” … Sirius XM \n“Undeniably\, One of Canada’s Hottest Comedians” … CBC \nDerek Seguin’s “Life of Leisure” tour. 18+ Adult content. Derek is one of the most sought after stand-up comedians on the international circuit. He has performed at the prestigious invitation-only Just For Laughs festival an impressive 11 times as well as appearing numerous times at every other major festival in the country\, making several television appearances along the way. \nAt a past Just for Laughs festival\, GQ Magazine’s Comedy Editor reported about JFL that: “Montreal-comic Derek Seguin stole one of the most star-studded gala shows last year from host Whitney Cummings. This year\, he appeared in The Nasty Show and proceeded to steal that too. A true star and Montreal’s pride and joy.” \nThe Montreal Gazette enthused that: “Derek Seguin earned a standing ovation for his set during the ninth Just for Laughs gala … had me gasping for air\, I was laughing so hard at the detailing of his second date with his Newfoundland girlfriend. … What made it great\, however\, was not the boldness of his material but that he described it all in such childlike wonder. Brilliant.” He has also appeared on CBC Radio’s\, “The Debaters” more than forty times and is one of the show’s fan favourites. Undeniably one of Canada’s hottest comedians\, he fittingly walked away with the top prize of Sirius XM’s Canada’s Top Comic competition a few years ago; a contest that spanned the entire country with finalists from every major city. \nIn March 2021\, it was announced that Derek’s latest Album\, “PanDerek – 1st Wave” had been nominated for a Juno award. Yet another milestone in an illustrious and hilarious career. Whether he’s ragging on politics or describing life with his children\, he brings us into his perspective without preaching any selfish point of view. His undeniable charm makes him simply fun to watch and listen to and is in large part why he is one of Canada’s most “in demand” comedians. The quintessential performer\, Derek is a stand-up comedian\, actor\, host\, narrator\, voice actor and most importantly\, father of 3 beautiful children… and all this\, in both English and French (especially the “papa” part). A consummate professional\, Derek is at home on stage in a comedy club\, conference centre\, theatre\, arena\, school or arts centre. He tailors his sets for all audiences and can work clean or filthy. There is no evening that won’t be livened up by the addition of Derek’s natural charm\, honed comedic genius and warm\, witty banter.

SUMMARY:Steve Dickinson and the Skinners Bluff
DESCRIPTION:Local singer-songwriter Steve Dickinson presents original material spanning 4 albums\, including songs from the Reed & Dickinson era of working with Bob Seger’s sax player\, the late great Alto Reed. Steve was writing and performing his own material even before he recorded his debut CD Blindside – an album that garnered regular airplay across Canada’s country radio airwaves and beyond.  That effort was followed by Four Down\, and Good Old Days. His songs are about hometowns and old friends.  They’re about giving an audience permission to be nostalgic for the past\, to remember simpler\, happy youthful times.  And his songs\, like his voice\, have turned heads.  Could you call his style country?  Roots? Blue Collar? Roadhouse?  A case could be made for any of these\, but only part marks if you pick just one\, because Steve’s material spans all these genres\, striking a familiar chord with a wide variety of folks along the way. Perhaps the best description going is ‘Rock and Rural’. Straightforward honest lyrics\, driven by appealing chord progressions\, delivered with heartfelt energy\, that’s Steve Dickinson’s and the band’s signature sound. \nROB RITCHIE // keyboards:  Music and words are Rob’s life.  He was a contributing songwriter and keyboardist for the touring roots/folk band Tanglefoot\, and he fulfills the same duties for folk rockers RPR.  He holds down the piano and organ duties for his son Josh Ritchie and his band as well as Roadhouse cover band Midnight Blue.   In 2004\, Rob released his own solo CD Five O’Clock Shadow.  When he’s not writing music\, he’s chasing down his other dream as a fiction writer\, having published four novels over the past twenty years.\n\nJEFF MAYNE // drums:  Jeff’s interests stretch from Mozart to Meatloaf.  Relocating to Owen Sound in 1987 afforded the opportunity to play with a long list of great musicians in numerous bands.  Currently Jeff can be found behind his kit keeping the beat and the driving rhythms for the Creedence CCR tribute act Bootleg\, and now as drummer for Steve Dickinson’s latest project\, Skinner’s Bluff.\n\nPAUL FARROW // bass:  Paul “Woggy” Farrow holds down the bottom end on the bass with Steve Dickinson and Skinner’s Bluff.  His association with Steve goes back decades\, to the point that –  notwithstanding his business successes running a recording studio and advertising agency –  Paul cites being hired by Steve at the age of 17 as the most significant event in his career as a musician.  “I’ve been fortunate to be included in many of Steve’s bands and recordings … as a co-producer\, engineer and session musician.  Playing live with Steve and the Skinner’s Bluff band tops off my bucket list.”\n\nFRED RUEGG //guitar:  Hailing from a remote mining town in northwest Labrador\, Fred’s career brought him to the Grey-Bruce area in 2002 where he re-connected with old friends\, and traded in his love of travelling (The USA\, China\, all across Canada)\, for the need to have a guitar in his hands.\nAs part of a fundraising event in 2022\, Fred got the opportunity to play a set with Steve Dickinson\, and a short time later joined the Skinner’s Bluff crew supplying the soaring leads and fills that make up the band’s signature sound. to play a set with Steve Dickinson\, and a short me later joined the Skinner’s Bluff crew the soaring leads

SUMMARY:Sideroad Farm Seedling Sale
DESCRIPTION:On until June. \nThe Sideroad Farm Organic Seedling Sale is on again in 2025! We grow a wide selection of garden favourites\, specifically selected and tested by the farmers at Sideroad Farm. Our seedlings are organic\, plastic-free (we use compostable pots and painstakingly hand stamp thousands of wooden tags) and loved by many home gardeners in the area. BYOBox (we’ll have some boxes available but tend to run low throughout the sale). \nThe seedling sale starts Thursday May 8th at 10 am and is open during store hours at the Sideroad Farm Store (Thursday 10-6\, Friday 10-6 and Saturday 10-4) until seedlings are sold out. We have many many plants started this year so there is no need to all rush and line up on May 8th. We will NOT be selling plants online this year and we can not reserve plants for you. The seedlings are available only for in-person shopping. If you would like to come during less busy times\, we recommend coming late afternoon/evening. For accessibility purposes there is a small set of steps down to the little plant shop and the ground is somewhat uneven as you walk up and down the rows of plants. We are happy to help you shop for plants…please let us know if you require assistance. \nIn general we recommend that plants that are not cold tolerant (peppers\, eggplants\, tomatoes\, ground cherries\, squashes\, cukes\, melons\, basil and some flowers) are NOT planted until on or after Victoria Day long weekend. Watch the weather forecast and if there is a chance of temperatures below 5C\, hold off planting.

SUMMARY:Glacial Erratic and Graven
DESCRIPTION:Experience a night with soulful Graven\, and the energetic banjo-funkers Glacial Erratic.\n\nGlacial Erratic:  Banjo-funk and Ontario’s electrifying party band. From iconic radio personality and author Jeff Woods (Q107\, Records and Rock Stars): “Glacial Erratic is\, per Oxford\, ‘A rock or boulder that differs from the surrounding rock\,’ and no truer words spoken.  Prog/jazz/twang/funk/funny\, Glacial Erratic bring to mind Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver meets other good-time weirdo vibes that make for a trippy listen on the hifi\, and a good time live in concert. Nicest people too. Book em\, Danno.”  \nWith a stand-up comedian for a lead singer and a tapped-in band of life-long jammers dishing out hypnotic grooves\, Glacial Erratic gets people up and dancing quick and then hits them with clever\, relatable\, hilarious lyrics. \n\nGraven: With 24 albums\, EPs and singles under his belt\, Nepean\, Ontario-born Matty (Graven) is a passionate wordsmith of song who wears his heart on the sleeve of his melodies. Graven’s newest self produced album “Always Everything” came out in July 2024 and has been his most streamed and downloaded to date. It debuted at #15 on the NACC streaming charts. Recorded mostly in his own basement studio and partially at Raven Street studios in Ottawa\, the 8 songs soar softly and sweetly with some heavy layered cinematic soundscapes and overtures\, focusing on the societal pressures of relationships. Graven’s last album Simple Complex (2021) was recorded at Fang Studios in Dartmouth\, Nova Scotia and mixed by Joel Plaskett. Bouncy\, jangly and thick with chunky acoustic strumming and fuzz layers\, SC charted across many college radio stations in Canada and the USA and was #3 on CKCU FM’s top 50 albums of 2022 (and he was also nominated for a FACES Ottawa award for “Country Artist”. ) \nWhether solo\, duo\, trio or with his magical 5 man band (dubbed The New Band)\, Matty’s performances are raw\, entertaining and warm. He has shared stages and opened for acts such as Jim Bryson\, Sloan\, The Killjoys\, Steve Poltz\, Danny Michel\, Sarah Harmer\, Elliott Brood\, Kathryn Calder (New Pornographers)\, Great Lake Swimmers\, Melissa Payne\, Stephen Stanley and Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low) and many more. Graven always tries to create a highly accepting and inclusive community and his music has become a safe-haven for anyone and everyone who wants to be their real-self without judgement.
