SUMMARY:Mid Week Music - Paige Warner Band
DESCRIPTION:With an evocative voice that captivates her audience\, “soulful Ontario songstress” (Billboard)\, Paige Warner\, creates alt-pop music with soul-inspired vocal licks layered on catchy hooks of poetic lyrics. Though her career started as a busker in her small hometown market\, her resilience has led her to perform on stages such as Massey Hall’s TD Music Hall\, Yonge-Dundas Square\, NXNE\, Owen Sound’s Summerfolk\, and share stages with iconic artists including 98 Degrees\, Ron Sexsmith\, Monowhales\, and Lori Yates. With over a hundred thousand streams and views\, Paige’s music has drawn love from media and listeners alike. \nPaige Warner’s voice is often what draws people in. “Paige is very much a modern pop singer-songwriter…but there’s something unmistakably timeless about her sound.” (Rrampt). While her music is catchy and emotive\, her lyrics often touch poetically on themes of heartbreak\, female resilience\, and love. With her brand new album\, Bitter/Sweet\, Paige Warner plans to continue creating intimate concert experiences\, sharing vulnerability through folk-like storytelling\, and having fun with catchy pop hooks\, all while leaving audiences with a memorable connection and a melody.

Fish are a familiar group but there are also many interesting plants\, molluscs\, amphipods\, insects\, worms\, freshwater sponges and more! Exploring the stories of these creatures through their everyday biology and evolutionary origins is incredible. We learn about how life colonized the lakes after the retreat of the last glacier and the impacts of geology on a waterscape. We will also touch on how to be a citizen scientist and the areas of knowledge that need our help! Specimens\, models\, rock samples and a microscope will be on display for exploration and discussion. This session is meant to inspire awe and build excitement for the “hidden” biodiversity of life in Lake Huron. \nSome Topics Covered \n– Unique fish biology from the jaws of a freshwater drum to the evolutionary radiation of ciscoes. \n– Great Lakes seashell makers! Native freshwater pearly mussels\, gastropods and limpets. \n– Other invertebrate groups like bryozoans\, seed shrimp and worms. \n– The various zones of the lake (benthic\, pelagic\, nearshore). \n– The geological origins of Lake Huron and how to experience these deep time narratives at dive sites. \n– Intro to iNaturalist app \n\n\nTime: 6-9pm \n\n\nLocation: Parks Canada Visitor Centre 120 Chi sin tib dek Rd\, Tobermory\, ON N0H 2R0 \n\n\nDAY 2\nSATURDAY MORNING: DIVE LIFE TOBERMORY CITIZEN SCIENCE IN ACTION DIVE & SNORKEL CHARTERS\n\nOn Saturday morning\, we put our training into practice! Participants will receive an onboard briefing on species ID and iNaturalist recording techniques before heading into the water; snorkelers will return at 10am\, while divers will complete two dives and return by 12pm. Citizen Science training and air fills are included\, but please come prepared with your own gear and approximately $15 for the mandatory Parks Canada Diver Registration Tags. \n\nTime: 8am vessel departures (7am checkin) \n\n\nLocation: Dive Life Tobermory – 3 Bay Street\, Tobermory\, ON N0H 2R0 \nSATURDAY AFTERNOON: TOBERMORY COMMUNITY CENTRE LUNCH & LEARN\n\n\nAfter a morning on the water\, divers will head to the Tobermory Community Centre from 12-3pm to recharge and reconnect. Enjoy a catered lunch while debriefing with fellow participants\, sharing findings\, and walking through the process of uploading your citizen science images to iNaturalist. \nThe afternoon features a specialized seminar led by Jenna McGuire on Underwater Sketching as a Tool for Citizen Science. This session builds on Friday’s discussions\, teaching you how to use sketching to document marine life and refine your observations in preparation for Sunday’s final dives. \nTime:  12pm-3pm \n\n\nLocation: Dive Life Tobermory – 3 Bay Street\, Tobermory\, ON N0H 2R0 \n\n\n\n\nDAY 3\nSUNDAY MORNING: DIVE LIFE TOBERMORY CITIZEN SCIENCE IN ACTION DIVE CHARTERS\n\nSunday morning mirrors our Saturday schedule\, giving divers a final opportunity to apply their new skills in the water. Following an 8am departure (7am check-in)\, we’ll head back into Fathom Five for two more citizen science dives. \nThis is your time to choose your focus: practice the underwater sketching techniques learned from Jenna McGuire or continue documenting species with your camera and iNaturalist. While this morning is dedicated to divers\, a snorkel boat can be made available if there is sufficient demand!  Divers will return to the dock at approximately 12pm. Citizen Science training and air fills are included\, but please come prepared with your own gear and approximately $15 for the mandatory Parks Canada Diver Registration Tags. \nSUNDAY AFTERNOON: DIVE LIFE TOBERMORY CLOSING CEREMONY DEBRIEF & NEXT STEPS\nImmediately following the Sunday dives\, we will gather for a brief Closing Ceremony. SUMMARY:Meditation in the Midst of Life - Workshop and Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:There is much myth and misinformation about what meditation is and isn’t\, who can do it\, why you do it and how you do it. \nThis four-part lecture series will guide you in different meditation techniques; explore different approaches and understandings of meditation across different cultures; tackle the inevitable challenges that pop up as you begin to meditate; and discuss the objectives\, benefits and transformation that will occur with meditation practice. \nTheodore Tsaousidis is the founder and teacher of the Snow Lion Meditation Community (formerly Toronto Mindfulness Community & Endless Ground Owen Sound). Authorized to teach in 2006\, his teaching approach is a comprehensive and practical integration of secular mindfulness alongside Buddhist classes. He draws from his extensive training in Tibetan Vajrayana and Zen Buddhism\, combined with traditional healing wisdoms. \nHe offers classes\, workshops and retreats in the Toronto and Owen Sound areas. The core of his work is simple and direct: to offer practical\, everyday tools to help individuals realize their inner worth and successfully navigate life’s inevitable emotional and physical valleys for the benefit of all beings.

SUMMARY:Porchside Festival - Sophie Lukacs
DESCRIPTION:Sophie Lukacs\n\n\n\n\nJuly 24 & 25\n\n\n\n\nSomewhere Inn\n\n\n\n\n128 St. Paul St.\, Collingwood\n\n\n\n\nA truly unique artist blending Hungarian\, classical\, and West African traditions\, Sophie Lukacs performs on the kora with breathtaking skill and artistry. Her award-winning music transcends cultures and creates a deeply moving live experience. This is a very special opportunity to hear this instrument being played and we encourage you to embrace this opportunity. This location has a bar and washrooms. \nAbout Sophie Lukacs \nBorn in Budapest\, raised in Montreal\, Sophie Lukacs came to the kora — the West African 21-string harp — through a chance encounter in Burkina Faso and a fateful moment hearing master Malang Jobarteh play in a New York subway. What followed was a seven-year pilgrimage to Mali\, studying with kora legend Toumani Diabaté\, and earning her place in a tradition not easily entered as an outsider. \nHer music weaves the West African Mandingue tradition with contemporary songwriting\, sung in four languages — English\, French\, Hungarian\, and Bambara. Her debut album Bamako\, featuring Habib Koité\, won Global Roots Album of the Year at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards\, bringing her to stages across Canada\, the US\, West Africa\, and Europe.
