SUMMARY:BALL Lecture Series: #4
DESCRIPTION:Our Tobacco Prayers\nThis engagement is intended to provide a clear understanding of tobacco’s importance and function within First Nation traditions and culture. \nThe origin of tobacco will be illustrated through the First Nation Creation Story. \nThe Creator provided\, gifted\, each colour of man something; it would ensure that he would always know what is on their minds and in their hearts as they walked along the pathway of life. To Anishinaabe he gifted tobacco. \nThis gift was presented with instruction and came with a promise. \nIf you could ask the Creator one question\, how would you do it and what would it be? \nLecturer –    Karl Keeshig \n\nI am recently retired after 31 years of service with the Federal Government\, ISC Indigenous Services Canada. My disciplines included Civil Engineering Technology. \nI have been a member of the Three Fires Midewin Lodge for over 35 years\, studying\, learning and teaching First Nation tradition and culture. My responsibilities in the Midewin Lodge are firstly that of a helper which I accomplish through my role as a Director. \nI am a 4th Degree Midewin. My Spirit Name is Wabuno Geezis (Morning Sun) and my clan is Miengun (Wolf) \nI am from the Chippewas of Nawash.

SUMMARY:Richard-Yves Sitoski book launch and signing
DESCRIPTION:Former Owen Sound Poet Laureate Richard-Yves Sitoski will launch his newest collection of poetry\, A Current Through the Flesh at The Rumpus Room at 7:00pm Thursday October 2. Hosted by The Ginger Press\, this event will include readings from the new book as well as a conversation exploring art and artistry between Richard and local poetry enthusiast Catherine Huntley. \nTickets can be purchased through gingerpress.com and include a copy of the book! \nAccording to the publisher (Ronsdale Press)\, “A Current Through the Flesh weaves family history into an abrasive cloth\, tailored into the full regalia of everyday life.” The poetry is surprising and haunting as it reveals four generations of the flimsiness of male self-image\, the perils of silence\, and the latent power of women oppressed by toxic beliefs. \nAs well as being an accomplished poet\, Richard is a songwriter\, performance artist\, playwright\, and visual artist. Previous books include Butterfly Tongue\, which became a one-person musical theatre piece he played to sold-out houses. As well\, his first collection of poems\, brownfields\, has just been reissued by The Ginger Press in an expanded 10+ anniversary edition.
